Datchet Green Furniture & Wall Paint by Sophie James Paint
Datchet Green by Sophie James Paint is a soft, muted green with gentle grey undertones. Calm and understated, this versatile shade works beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
This green furniture paint is ideal for giving vintage and upcycled furniture a fresh new look, while also being suitable for walls and a wide range of other interior and exterior surfaces.
We've used Datchet Green ourselves on this unusual tiered side table and these lovely green bedside cabinets, showing how beautifully the colour works on furniture.
Sophie James Datchet Green Paint
Sophie James Paint is a premium, water-based decorating and furniture paint with more than 30 years of commercial use behind it. It provides excellent coverage, strong adhesion and a smooth, durable finish, making it suitable for everything from furniture upcycling projects to larger decorating jobs.
One litre covers up to 14 m², while the quick-drying formula allows two coats to be applied within around two hours. Some brighter or more vibrant colours may require additional coats to achieve full colour depth.
The paint is self-priming with built-in wax, meaning there is normally no need for a separate primer or protective topcoat such as varnish, lacquer or finishing wax. This makes Sophie James Paint a convenient choice for furniture painting and home decorating projects.
Where Can Sophie James Paint Be Used?
Datchet Green furniture paint is highly versatile and can be used on a wide range of correctly prepared surfaces, including:
- Furniture and wooden surfaces
- MDF
- Walls and plaster
- Metal
- Glass
- Brick
- Concrete
- Exterior surfaces
When painting MDF, the paint penetrates and binds with the fibres to create a durable finish. Cut edges can be particularly absorbent, so these areas may need additional preparation and coats.
Sophie James Paint can be used indoors and outdoors when the surface is correctly prepared for painting.
A Durable Alternative to Chalk Paint
Sophie James Paint does not contain chalk. Instead, it uses a non-toxic natural mineral designed to help improve durability, weather resistance and long-term appearance.
The water-based formulation uses high-performance resins and carefully balanced additives to provide excellent adhesion, easy application and a smooth, long-lasting finish.
This makes it particularly well suited to furniture upcycling, where a durable finish is important for pieces that will be regularly used.
Create Your Own Colour
All Sophie James Paint colours can be mixed together, giving you the freedom to create your own bespoke shades.
Datchet Green can also be used as part of layered and distressed furniture finishes. Lightly sanding through a top colour can reveal an underlying shade or natural timber, creating a timeworn finish that works particularly well on vintage and upcycled furniture.
If you're unsure whether Datchet Green is the right shade for your project, peel-and-stick colour samples and tester pots are available, allowing you to see the colour in your own space before committing to a larger tin.
Low VOC Furniture & Wall Paint
Sophie James Paint is formulated to meet the UK Paint Directive 2012 Low VOC standards, with a maximum VOC content of 10g per litre.
The packaging is recyclable, and orders are packed using biodegradable materials wherever possible.
How to Use Sophie James Paint
Good preparation is important for achieving a durable, professional finish.
Before painting, make sure the surface is clean, dry and free from grease, polish, dust and loose or flaking paint.
Prepare the Surface
Start by vacuuming the surface to remove loose dust. Clean thoroughly with sugar soap to remove grease, oils, old polish and general grime. An abrasive sponge or brush can help with more stubborn areas.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water as you work and do not allow cleaning residue to dry on the surface. Wipe clean and allow the surface to dry completely.
Porous surfaces such as plaster, concrete, render and bare timber may require additional drying time.
Once dry, lightly sand the surface with fine abrasive paper to provide a good key for the paint. Remove any loose or flaking paint and fill larger cracks or imperfections with a suitable ready-mixed filler. Allow the filler to dry fully before sanding smooth.
Vacuum and wipe the surface again to remove all remaining dust before painting.
Special Surface Preparation
Some surfaces require additional preparation.
Glass: Clean thoroughly with a suitable solvent, such as methylated spirits, to remove contaminants.
Plastic: Wash with soapy water, allow to dry, lightly abrade the surface and remove all dust before painting.
Applying Sophie James Paint
Stir the paint thoroughly before use, making sure any pigment settled at the bottom of the tin is fully mixed.
For easier application, pour the paint into a separate container. On new, unpainted plaster, the first coat can be diluted with up to 10% clean water if required.
Apply using a good-quality brush or roller. A medium or short-nap roller works well on larger areas, while brushes are ideal for edges, corners and detailed furniture.
Two coats are recommended for a high-quality finish, although particularly bold or vibrant colours may require additional coats.
After use, return any unused paint to the tin and clean brushes and rollers thoroughly with clean water.
